Asthma

Natural remedies for managing asthma symptoms

What is Asthma according to Ayurveda?

Asthma is a condition where a person feels difficulty in breathing due to narrowing of the airways. It often causes coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath, especially when exposed to dust, pollution, or cold weather. In Ayurveda, asthma is called Tamaka Shwasa, which happens when excess Kapha (mucus) blocks the lungs and disturbs the flow of Vata (air). Ayurvedic herbs like Vasaka, Haridra (turmeric), and Pippali help clear the airways, reduce mucus, and make breathing easier. With the right lifestyle care and natural remedies, asthma can be well managed and the quality of life can improve.

Asthma can show up in different forms depending on the cause and symptoms.

1. Allergic (Extrinsic) Asthma

  • Triggered by dust, pollen, animal dander, or food allergies.
  • Symptoms: Sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, wheezing, and breathlessness.

2. Non-Allergic (Intrinsic) Asthma

  • Not related to allergies; often triggered by stress, infections, weather changes, or strong odors.
  • Symptoms: Cough, chest tightness, and breathing difficulty without allergy signs.

3. Exercise-Induced Asthma

  • Symptoms: Shortness of breath, wheezing, and coughing during or after exercise.

4. Cough-Variant Asthma

  • Main symptom is chronic cough (without much wheezing).
  • Symptoms: Persistent dry cough, worse at night, with mild chest tightness.

5. Occupational Asthma

  • Triggered by workplace irritants like chemicals, smoke, dust, or fumes.
  • Symptoms: Coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath that improve on weekends or holidays.

6. Severe Asthma
