As per Ayurveda, cough (Kāsa) occurs due to the imbalance of Vāta and Kapha doshas affecting the Prāṇavaha Srotas (respiratory system). Aggravated Kapha accumulates in the chest and throat, producing mucus, while disturbed Vāta causes abnormal movement of air, leading to coughing. Weak digestive fire (Mandāgni) results in the formation of Āma (toxins), which further blocks the respiratory channels and triggers cough. Exposure to cold air, dust, smoke, pollution, improper diet, and seasonal changes are common causative factors that aggravate doshas. Classical Ayurvedic texts like Charaka Saṁhitā state that aggravated Vāta and Kapha lodged in the respiratory passages are the primary cause of cough.
Ayurveda recommends herbs like Yashtimadhu (Glycyrrhiza glabra) for cough due to its soothing, demulcent, and anti-inflammatory properties, as described in Charaka Saṁhitā (Cikitsā Sthāna, Kāsa Cikitsā). Kantakari (Solanum xanthocarpum) is a prime herb for Kāsa and Śvāsa, helping to clear Kapha from the lungs, as mentioned in Bhāvaprakāśa Nighaṇṭu. Pippali (Piper longum) acts as an expectorant and bioavailability enhancer, balancing Vāta and Kapha, and is widely referenced in Charaka Saṁhitā and Aṣṭāṅga Hṛdaya. Vasa (Adhatoda vasica) is indicated for productive cough and respiratory congestion due to its Kapha-reducing and bronchodilatory action, as noted in Kaiyadeva Nighaṇṭu. Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) supports respiratory health by reducing Kapha and improving digestion, thereby preventing Āma, as mentioned in Charaka Saṁhitā. Draksha (Vitis vinifera) helps relieve throat irritation and Pittaja cough due to its cooling and nourishing nature, as explained in Bhāvaprakāśa.
Kofloc is an Ayurvedic formulation designed to manage cough by balancing Kapha and Vata doshas acting on the Pranavaha Srotas as described in Charaka Samhita Kasachikitsa. Vasa is indicated for productive cough and bronchial conditions due to its Kapha reducing and Shothahara properties and modern studies attribute its action to alkaloids like vasicine with bronchodilatory and expectorant effects. Tulsi and Banafsa are traditionally used for cough and throat irritation as mentioned in Bhavaprakasha Nighantu and their modern pharmacology shows antimicrobial anti inflammatory and antitussive activity. Sunthi Marica and Pippali together form Trikatu which enhances Agni reduces Ama and facilitates the expulsion of accumulated Kapha from the respiratory tract as referenced in Charaka Samhita. Modern science supports Trikatu for improving mucociliary clearance and enhancing bioavailability of active compounds. Gojiva acts as a nourishing and soothing agent for the respiratory mucosa helping to reduce irritation and dryness associated with cough. From a modern perspective, the combined formulation exhibits expectorant anti anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects that help relieve cough. Thus, Kofloc works holistically by addressing the root doshic imbalance while providing symptomatic relief supported by both classical Ayurvedic texts and contemporary scientific findings.
